My god there was some great video games in the early 90s.
After cleaning out my childhood closet at home I stumbled across a stack of Nintendo video games I used to play as a youngster.
I was almost shocked to find NBA Jam was still in its case.
The game was by far one of my all time favourite games growing up and after playing it I felt I had to relive my account of why I love the game so much.
In case you were not familiar with the game, NBA Jam was release in 1993 by Midway, and kicked off a huge franchise in the basketball video game world.
The game had two players per side going head to head on a 2D basketball court.
Players were able to choose their favourite NBA side, back in the days when Charlotte Hornet’s still existed, and when Michael Jordan was still the best player in the world.
One of the best features of NBA Jam was the exaggerated nature of the play. Players were able to jump super heights and defend with unnatural ability.
The best feature of all time in my eyes was the ability to get ‘on fire’. After scoring three consecutive shots, your player will then go on fire, meaning they will have unlimited turbo, no goaltending, and increased shooting ability, until the other team scored.
For a game so old, the game play is actually still quite amazing, and if you were to sit down today and play it for a few hours you could easily fall back in love with NBA Jam.
