Lego Battles

Running in the same vein as the successful 90’s release, Lemmings, Lego Battles is all about sacrificing members of your team to pass each level/stage.

The concept is kind of cool given the characters are the block head figurines we all loved when we were younger.

Previous Lego releases stayed locked into the mindset of producing kid-friendly, cute and cuddly type images in a gameplay that appealed to the younger audience.

This game, however, tries to take the next step into a territory of real-time strategy, embracing the basic concepts on which many past successful games are built.

Resource acquisition, building construction, unit production, and combat are the main gameplay elements in Lego Battles and it does a good job of satisfying most RTS lovers while making it easier for inexperienced gamers to embrace the new release.

The downside is the graphics of the game are quite poor, making it hard to visually immerse yourself into the game. It cal also get frustrating when you are trying to frantically make decisions during each game.

There are six different stages, known as campaigns, in Lego Battles, each featuring a different Lego theme. Medieval knights, skeleton warriors, pirates, an imperial navy, astronauts, and aliens are all intertwined into the theme of each unique campaign that will take a few hours to complete.

Lego Battles features an enjoyable multiplayer function in which you and two mates can team up, combat style, and work together to complete each campaign.

Imitating a 15 year-old game is always a tough task, but Lego Battles seems to have done a good job. It has maintained the successful features while improving those that were letting the original game down.

Lego Battles is out now on Nintendo DS.
