It’s still a work in progress, but the horror genre of video games is starting to raise some eyebrows, for the right reason we hope.
The latest addition to the vide game sub division is the Japanese game, The Calling.
While the tile is not directly linked to any movie, or based on any particular horror movie, it is heavily influenced by films like The Grudge and The Ring. One only has to look at the characters in the game to realize what it has leant from Japanese horror flicks.
The game opens with widespread rumors of a strange website called “The Black Page”, which attracts many curious online surfers.
Originally, most are puzzled when they load it up to find a blank page and a visitor counter.
However, a select few that stumble upon the site find a chat room where the page once existed.
While tapping away at their keyboards in the chat rooms, these poor individuals suddenly receive a phone call that transports them to an alternative plane of existence called the ‘Mnemonic Abyss’.
The story of the game from here follows the journey of four victims doomed to existence somewhere between life and death.
Their only hope is to escape from the hell via the controls of the user.
The good thing about the game is that is starts of great, and hooks you early with its cool graphics and interesting plot.
But at the same time the bad thing is that it becomes stale really fast, and eventually becomes just another predictable horror video game.
