Games developer DICE is about to release the latest installment in its highly successful Battlefield series, Battlefield 1943.
Unlike the games to precede it, 1943 is a multiplayer-only game, and is downloadable directly to console or PC.
Following on from the traditions set in previous editions, this game sees you fight out gun battles in historical WWII settings in the Pacific.
In such famous areas as Guadalcanal, you fight as either the US Marines or Imperial Japanese, racing to capture flags and checkpoints and taking down opponents in a variety of ways.
Many players will comment first up that Battlefield 1943 feels a little like a hybrid of the popular Battlefield 1942 and the most recent edition in the series, Bad Company.
The Frostbite game engine that made destroying buildings and scenery so enjoyable in Bad Company returns for Battlefield 1943, allowing you to wreak maximum havoc on your foes and surroundings.
There are four maps included with the original download, and it is expected this will grow into more options (via download) down the track.
You can chose from three classes to enter the fray with; a rifleman, an infantry soldier and a scout.
Each class has different weapons. The rifleman has a rifle, grenade launcher attachment and a bayonet. The infantry soldier has a submachine gun, a bazooka and a wrench. The scout has a sniper rifle, a pistol and a sword.
One of the real drawing points of this game is the quality mechanics of using vehicles. You can very easily jump in a plane or a jeep, and use it to mow down large numbers of opponents. Turrets line the islands too, making great places to strategically setup your next attack on the enemy.
And the best news is that this game will be very cheap to download. Currently it is available for US$15, and AU$ pricing has not yet been revealed.
The PC version will come out a little after the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions, but it will be worth waiting for.
On the whole, this is an engrossing and fulfilling multiplayer shooter that will get increasingly better as the online community grows.
The absence of single player is only mildly disappointing once you get into the swing of the game and enjoy all the refinements made by the DICE team.
